There are people here who have controlled entire shows from a laptop using Cakewalk including the lights. Once you learn it though it seems easier. I didn't find a lot of the functions in Ableton as intuitive compared to most of the more common DAWs, Ableton is a little quirky that respect. Then you can do pretty much anything you want to do in either one. Based on its MIDI and audio recording functions, even folks who don’t play guitar could get a lot out of the software.

This software is basically a mildly scaled-back version of Cakewalk Professional with some guitar-friendly functions thrown in.

There are more than 100 alternatives to Cakewalk for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPad. Anyone familiar with the Cakewalk family of sequencer/digital audio recorder products already knows a lot about Guitar Studio. Cakewalk is very commonly seen in personal and project studio because it is PC only and reasonably priced. It is more than capable to run orchestral recording sessions but is rarely used for such things. You need to invest time into Cakewalk to learn it same as Ableton. Cakewalk is described as, formerly SONAR, is a comprehensive audio software for music composition, audio recording, editing, mixing and mastering and is a Music Production App in the Audio & Music category. Cakewalk is simply marketed and designed more towards the music producer and electronic musician.

They are both complicated ecosystems to the uninitiated that need full attention. I used a Qneo.Ĭakewalk is a great program for those who don't conceptualize everything in a "loop" format, even though Cakewalk plays any loop you can throw at it, Rex, acid.or you can make your own loops. You need some kind of midi control unless you plan to use hot keys. You can get there with Cakewalk but less intuitive to link those cells up with midi triggers. Want to add another sound to an existing chorus during a live gig, no eat for modern DJ and dance music. The main uses I have found are, moving mixes around live at the loops level, changing between verse/choruses on the fly live. Especially if you built a song in the loops view and want to record it as a typical multitrack in tracks view. Yes Cakewalk has the matrix but it doesn't seem to work as well going between screens as Ableton does. The main differences are the dual screen approaches that are unique to Ableton. I have used it with a laptop to play backing tracks and it works well for that. With SONAR Home Studio 7 you can record live instruments, vocals, or any audio source. From start to finish, SONAR Home Studio 7 will help you capture your creativity and share it with the world. What I really needed was a way to play backing tracks which can be done in almost any DAW including Cakewalk, so my Ableton has been sitting gathering dust. Cakewalk SONAR Home Studio 7 is a software package that gives you one of the easiest ways to turn your PC into a full-fledged music production studio. I mainly bought Ableton because I understood it to be the best program for live work. I am coming at this from the opposite direction and have Ableton 10 as an addition to Cakewalk.
